Retailing was once great in Buffalo, New York. This blog is about the history of former retailers, coinciding with the new book "Nine Nine Eight: The Glory days of Buffalo Shopping" coming out May 5, 2007 by local author Mike Rizzo.

When I Was A Little Girl & My Mother Took Me Downtown We Always Stopped At Neisners On Main St. We Went Downstairs To The Cafeteria Where I Got To Order A Scoop Of Mashed Potatoes With Gravy. As A Child This Was The Highlight Of Many Shopping Trips Downtown.
Another Treat When I Was Alittle Older Was Having A Hotdog At WT Grants. They Used Some Kind Of Buttered Toasted Bread Instead Of A Roll. Yummy!
The Kmart subs were great - not the ones from the cafeteria, but the ones you got in that both thing learer to the checkout. The secret was the oil - Kmart sub oil was the best. I sure do miss it.
I have so many great memories of food in Blfo.. Going to the Market on Saturday and eating fresh rolls and coldcuts on the way home in the car and after they opened the pizza place in the Market, getting the pizza and eating it in the car while waiting for my parents to buy the groceries.. Yum, pizza never tasted so great... Then the ice cream at Sattlers.. While working there, we would go to the basement and buy a roll, fresh cold cuts and take them upstairs for lunch.. When they closed that, the macaroni and cheese at the Parosol Room, yummmmmm... The hotdogs at Grants were great and I ate plenty of them working there... Then there was the kluski and sauerkraut at Pierson's in the Broadway Market... I could go on and on.. Oh, don't forget the Lime Freezes at Neisners on Broadway.. And you even got a free glass..
There was the mall under the main Place Mall that had good greek food. What was that mall called?
